Various hotels in Ghana were honoured for their respective contributions towards boosting Ghana’s tourism industry at the 3rd edition of the Ghana Hotels Association Awards.
The event, which was held at the plush Labadi Beach Hotel last Saturday, also brought staff of various hotels together for merry making in a graceful event. Some of the hotels that were recognised for their contributions included Kempinski Hotel (5-star hotel of the year), Coconut Grove Regency Hotel, Movenpick Hotel (Most Secured Hotel), Labadi Beach Hotel (Food and Beverage Team of the year, 4 & 5-star category) among others.
President of the Ghana Hotels Association, Herbert Aquaye, in his welcome address acknowledged the crucial role the awards ceremony plays in sustaining efforts aimed at making the tourism industry more relevant and profitable.
Chairman of the event and the 2016 Lifetime Achievement award winner, Mr. Hudson Kojo Ablordepey, who was also a guest speaker, touched on challenges hindering the development of the tourism industry. He emphasized the need to deal with challenges that have bedeviled the tourism sector in order for Ghana to be the preferred tourist destination among travellers.
Awards that were up for grabs included the Food and Beverage team of the year which went to African Regent Team, Conference and Banqueting team of the year which went to Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in the 2 & 3-Star category.
This year’s ceremony saw the introduction of a new category; Most Authentic Hotel of the Year which was won by the Royal Senchi Hotel.
Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom was adjudged the 2017 Lifetime Achievement winner.
The Ghana Hotels Association was formed in 1975 by about 20 hotel owners who felt the need to consolidate their investments and contribute to the development of the hotel industry in Ghana. The Association presently boasts of over 1000 members made up of directors, proprietors, general managers and the like. The Association also spearheads the development of the tourism industry.
