American tourist, Ms Kimberly Sue Endicott and her tour guide Jean Paul Mirenge, who were kidnapped in Queen Elizabeth National park and held five days have been returned unharmed on Sunday.

A highly placed source in Uganda’s security said Kim Sue Endicott of Southern California and her tour guide, Congolese national Jean-Paul Mirenge Remezo, were freed in a negotiated handover.

The kidnappers who abducted the two had demanded a $500,000 ransom, but it was not immediately known what sort of arrangement was agreed upon to secure their release.

Africa Tembelea has learnt that, Endicott and Remezo were taken back to Ishasha Wilderness Camp in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

“Security services have this evening managed to rescue kidnapped US citizen Kimberly Sue Endicott and her driver Jean Paul Mirenge [Remezo],” Government of Uganda tweeted.

The tweet expressed appreciation to the Ugandan police and sister security agencies “that led the operation to return Sue and Jean Paul.”

Endicott and Remezo were “recovered unharmed, in good health” and were in the “safe hands of the joint security team.”

Many including other tourists currently on safari in Queen Elizabeth National park have lauded Uganda’s security forces for their professionalism and have been seen continuing with their safari in and around the wildlife park.
