Broadcaster and tourism entrepreneur, Gilbert ‘Abeiku Santana’ Aggrey has proposed to give free training to any driver who is looking to incorporate tourism to his trade.

Abeiku Santana made the announcement on the Tuesday August 24th edition of the Tourism Drive Show on Accra-based Okay Fm. Discussions centred on the state of Ghana’s Tourism and the need for professionals in the hospitality industry with focus academic and career opportunities that exist in the sector.

Discussants, the Executive Director of the Ghana Tourism Federation, Emmanuel Frimpong and Content Editor of Voyagesafriq Samuel Obeng Appah together with host, Abeiku Santana agreed that the general Ghanaian populace are yet to fully embrace tourism as a viable, lucrative and prestigious career path.

Part of the reasons was attributed to the lack of training which has had an adverse effect on industry standards over the years.

By offering to train drivers, Abeiku Santana said, “It will help address the service delivery gap that exists within the value chain starting with the drivers who are the main conduits for the movement of tourists and visitors.”

Countries such as Kenya and Rwanda are big on training drivers on their tourism offerings which they are able to communicate well to visitors and tourists to the country. This has made driving quite an attractive occupation even for highly educated persons.

Abeiku Santana believes this is the kind of training Ghana needs to bring its tourism industry at par with competitive destinations in Africa and around the world.

The Tourism Drive Show is put together to advocate and champion some of these things with the ultimate goal of driving domestic tourism and raising the service standards in the hospitality and other related sectors. It airs on Okay Fm 101.7 from 4pm each Tuesday.

Anyone interested in receiving the free training from Abeiku Santana can contact him via Whatsapp on 0207150150
