The Gambia Showcases Cultural Craftsmanship at FIA Lisboa 2025

The Gambia, often celebrated as the “Smiling Coast of Africa,” is placing its creative industry at the forefront of global attention through its participation in the ongoing International Handicrafts Fair (FIA Lisboa 2025) in Lisbon, Portugal. Held from 28 June to 6 July 2025, the fair brings together a mosaic of cultures, crafts, and traditions from across the world, with The Gambia proudly representing West Africa’s rich artisanal heritage.

FIA Lisboa is recognized as the largest multicultural trade and craftsmanship exhibition in the Iberian Peninsula and thesecond-largest of its kind in Europe. More than just a showcase, the event is a strategic marketplace that fosters connections between tradition and innovation. Exhibitors present handcrafted goods ranging from textiles and jewellery to home décor and functional art, allowing attendees to experience the essence of global creativity.

At this year’s edition, Gambian artisans and exhibitors have curated an engaging display of traditional crafts. Their offerings, ranging from handwoven textiles and eco-conscious accessories to cultural ornaments, serve as a visual narrative of the country’s identity, resilience, and commitment to preserving its intangible heritage. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, the works embody stories of intergenerational knowledge, community empowerment, and economic opportunity.

The Gambian delegation’s presence at FIA Lisboa is not just symbolic; it is a calculated investment in the nation’s growing creative economy. Through engagement with international buyers and cultural stakeholders, The Gambia is building avenues for trade, cultural diplomacy, and sustainable tourism development.

This participation also follows The Gambia’s recent involvement at Experience Africa 2025, where it joined 206 other exhibitors in London to promote the continent’s diverse travel offerings. These coordinated efforts reflect the country’s wider strategy to amplify its visibility and attract meaningful international partnerships, especially within the tourism and cultural sectors.

In line with global goals to foster inclusive development, The Gambia’s involvement in such platforms is commendable and as the fair continues through early July, The Gambia’s participation remains a compelling example of how a nation can honor its roots while engaging globally.
