Ghana has taken another significant step in modernising its aviation infrastructure with the deployment of state-of-the-art security screening technology at Accra International Airport, reinforcing the country’s position as a leading aviation hub in West Africa while making travel through Accra faster and more convenient.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) announced the installation of the new security screening equipment at passenger screening checkpoints in Terminals 2 and 3 of Accra International Airport. The upgrade is expected to enhance aviation security standards while significantly improving the passenger experience.
The advanced screening technology introduces a number of traveller-friendly features that align with international best practices at many of the world’s leading airports.
Among the key improvements is the ability for passengers to leave laptops and other large electronic devices inside their cabin baggage during security screening, eliminating one of the most time-consuming aspects of airport security checks.
Travellers will also be allowed to keep their shoes and belts on while passing through security.
In another major convenience, passengers will no longer be required to remove liquids, aerosols and gels from their hand luggage for separate screening. However, GACL emphasised that existing international aviation regulations remain in force, with liquids still limited to containers of no more than 100 millilitres.

The airport has also introduced an Automatic Tray Return System, which will automatically return screening trays to passengers, reducing waiting times and improving the efficiency of the screening process.
According to GACL, the deployment of the new equipment forms part of efforts to strengthen aviation security while providing a smoother, more seamless journey for passengers travelling through Accra.
The rollout will be carried out progressively over the coming days and weeks, operating alongside existing screening systems during the transition period to ensure uninterrupted airport operations.
GACL has appealed to passengers and other airport stakeholders for their cooperation during the phased implementation, expressing confidence that the new system will deliver faster processing times without compromising the country’s high aviation security standards.
