The Government of Ethiopia has scrapped the Ethiopian Tourism Organization and has it replaced with Tourism Ethiopia with expanded mandate to drive the country’s tourism. The new organization will be under the office of the Prime Minister.

Tourism Ethiopia is to strategically promote the country’s resources and attractions domestically and around the world by engaging with relevant stakeholders; lead and support the development of new attractions, in addition to developing strategies in maintaining current heritage sites.

Lensa Mekonnen as the Chief Executive Officer leads the new organization and seven other board members expected to drive the country’s tourism sector..

The new management has hit the ground running and has convened meetings with several stakeholders of the sector.

Tourism Ethiopia will serve as the foremost agency in conducting research on the sector, collecting and synthesizing data on tourism while instituting tourism information centers around the country.

The new organization is expected to work on branding Ethiopia as the foremost destination on the continent by mobilizing all stakeholders towards a common goal – showcasing the numerous touristic attractions the country has to offer.

With its new mandate being refined through proper policies, expect to hear more from Tourism Ethiopia through 2019.
