The Secretary General of World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Ambassador Zurab Pololikashvili is set for a return to Africa with a visit to Tunisia on 20th March 2018. The visit will be the Secretary General’s second to the Maghreb region after his maiden visit to Egypt in 2018.

The two-day working tour is at the invitation of the Government of Tunisia. He will be accompanied by Mr Zhu Shanzhong , UNWTO’s Executive Director and Director of Africa Department Ms Elcia Grandcourt.

The visit of the Secretary General to Tunisia will coincide with the beginning of the tourist season in Tunisia and the launch of the Handicrafts Creation Fair as well as the celebration of the 63rd independence anniversary of the country.

While in Tunisia, Ambassador Pololikashvili and his team will hold high level meetings with the Head of State, Head of Government, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, reinforcing UNWTO’s commitment to supporting the tourism sector in Tunisia.

It is important to recognize that Tunisia is one of the most resilient countries in terms of tourism, as seen by the strong rebound in 2017 with an increase of 23.2% of international arrivals.

As a founding member state of UNWTO, Tunisia has worked closely with UN body and collaborated on different levels since 1975.

During this year’s Investour conference in Madrid, Tunisia signed an MoU with the UNWTO with the latter committed to supporting the North African country’s efforts to strengthen their tourism industry
