Tunisia’s Tourism Minister calls on UNWTO Secretary General

Tunisia’s Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Mohamed Moez Belhassine has called on the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Zurab Pololikashvili at the organization’s headquarters in Madrid, Spain.

Meeting with the UN Tourism Chief for the first time since his appointment as Minister of Tourism, the minister congratulated Mr. Pololikashvili for his reappointment and reiterated Tunisia’s support for the activities of the UNWTO.

He further added his voice to other leading industry leaders on the harmonization of travel protocols as vital for the global tourism restart.

On his part, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili thanked him for the participation of Tunisia as a case study in the white paper on safety and security in the tourism sector. The Secretary-General presented three volumes of the white paper to the Minister.

Other areas of discussion were the areas of technical assistance and cooperation for Tunisia, as well as the committment to rual tourism development.

Tunisia has been working assiduously to diversify its source markets with a special focus on new /niche markets.

Tunsia has been a member of the UNWTO since its establishment in 1975.

Tourism in Tunisia is an industry that generates around 19.4 million arrivals per year in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020, which makes it one of the most visited countries in Africa. Tunisia has been an attractive destination for tourists since the beginning of the 1960s. Among Tunisia’s tourist attractions are its cosmopolitan capital city of Tunis, the ancient ruins of Carthage, the Muslim and Jewish quarters of Djerba, and coastal resorts outside Monastir.
