GYTS Update: Participants debate Tourism’s role in creating a better world

Day two of the ongoing Global Youth Tourism Summit got off to an exciting start with a sustainable gastronomy masterclass session by Chilean chef Pilar Rodriguez.

Ms. Pilar Rodriguez, who also doubles as a UNWTO Ambassador encouraged the youngsters to pursue their dreams and thoroughly took the youngsters through her culinary journey and why it was important for the world to eat what they grow. Gastronomy Sustainability she added was cardinal not only for tourism but it addresses food security issues.

The delegates then were grouped into five sessions discussing “How tourism can impact rural communities, rural tourism development, digitization and online security supervised by tutors and educators.”

The immeasurable joy expressed by the enthusiastic youngsters led them in coming up with impressive ideas such as combatting mass tourism, promoting biodiversity, equality, and tolerance among other pressing subjects.

A debate dubbed ”My responsibility or yours” pitched two members of the Qatar foundation team to discuss the merits and demerits of sustainable tourism while generating insightful perspectives on the role of individuals particularly the youth for a better world.


President and CEO at Cruise Lines International Association Ms. Kelly Craighead rounded up the day with motivational talks with delegates. Ms. Craighead highlighted the crucial role of the youth in building a better tomorrow.

“Empowering today’s youth to help solve the global challenges we face is critical to achieving sustainable tourism for the future and ensuring tourism continues to enrich lives for generations to come,” she maintained.

The program continues today with a Sports Masterclass to be conducted by Ivorian and Chelsea soccer legend Didier Drogba.

The first Global Youth Tourism Summit is organized by UNWTO and hosted in Italy in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the National Tourism Agency (ENIT).It has assembled more than 130 young people from 60 countries giving them a unique platform to play a leading role in the future of the sector
