Seychelles Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Mr Sylvestre Radegonde has been honoured with the esteemed Minister of the Year Award for the Indian Ocean Region by the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA). The announcement was made during a special event at ITB Berlin 2024, underscoring Minister Radegonde’s outstanding leadership and contributions to Seychelles’ tourism sector.

PATWA, a renowned organisation dedicated to promoting global tourism through responsible journalism and sustainable travel initiatives, annually recognises governments, organisations, brands, ministers, and individuals who excel in promoting tourism. Minister Radegonde was selected from a distinguished pool of candidates for his exceptional achievements in advancing the tourism sector, particularly during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic.

His visionary leadership has led to the implementation of groundbreaking programmes such as “Lospitalite – Lafyerte Sesel,” “Creole Rendezvous,” and the revamping of “Sustainable Seychelles.” These initiatives have propelled Seychelles’ tourism sector to new heights, fostering economic growth and creating opportunities for local communities.

Upon accepting the award, Minister Radegonde expressed gratitude to PATWA and reiterated his commitment to promoting responsible tourism and sustainable development. He emphasised the importance of collaboration among government agencies, industry stakeholders, and local communities in achieving shared goals and building a more inclusive and resilient tourism sector.

“As the Minister for Tourism, I am here today not only to represent our industry, but also as a guardian of our planet. The realities of climate change can no longer be ignored, especially in Seychelles where nature reminds us of it every day. This is why we have taken it upon ourselves to proactively address its effects and secure the sustainability of our stunning destination for future generations. I am truly honoured and humbled to accept this prestigious award. I dedicate it to the hardworking men and women in the Seychelles Tourism industry, as it is their efforts that have made Seychelles a leading sustainable destination in our region,” said Minister Radegonde upon receiving his award.

The PATWA International Travel Awards, presented annually at ITB Berlin since 1999, are among the most prestigious accolades in the travel industry, recognising excellence and innovation in the field.
