On Monday, May 6th, 2024, amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), the stage was set for an insightful panel discussion on “The New Age of Island Tourism.” The session delved into the evolving landscape of island destinations, particularly in the context of environmental challenges and innovative tourism approaches.
Highlighting the pivotal role of islands in the global tourism sphere, the panel explored diverse perspectives on sustainable development, climate resilience, and cultural immersion. Among the distinguished speakers was Sylvestre Radegonde, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of the Republic of Seychelles, who offered valuable insights into Seychelles’ unique tourism offerings and its proactive stance on climate adaptation.
Minister Radegonde spoke about what makes islands popular holiday choices, and in the case of Seychelles, citing the desire to escape from urban life to experience nature as a primary motivation for travellers. He further went on emphasising Seychelles’ rich diversity, with each island boasting distinct attractions and experiences, ranging from cultural immersion to nature exploration.
Addressing the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on island nations, the Seychelles Tourism Minister acknowledged Seychelles’ vulnerability to rising sea levels. He highlighted ongoing efforts to safeguard the country’s coastline through strategic resource allocation. However, he expressed concerns over the limited international assistance available for climate mitigation and adaptation measures to island states classified as high-income like Seychelles.
Furthermore, Minister Radegonde reiterated Seychelles’ active participation in international fora, advocating for greater attention to the plight of vulnerable island nations. He emphasised the need for collective action to address the root causes of climate change and ensure the long-term sustainability of island tourism.
The panel discussion, moderated by Mark Frary, writer for the Sunday Times and other esteemed publications, provided a platform for fruitful exchanges, underscoring the importance of global cooperation in shaping the future of island tourism.
