Ghana has taken a significant step to strengthen its role in African aviation, as President John Dramani Mahama officially cut the sod for a new interconnecting concourse at Accra International Airport.
The project will link Terminals 2 and 3 at the country’s main international gateway, easing congestion and improving passenger flow as travel demand continues to rise across the region.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama framed the development as a forward-looking investment in Ghana’s global competitiveness. He noted that passenger traffic through the airport has grown steadily—from 1.8 million in 2022 to a projected 2.5 million in 2025—highlighting the country’s increasing importance as both a destination and transit point for international travellers.

However, he acknowledged that this growth has placed pressure on existing infrastructure, particularly during peak travel periods when congestion affects passenger experience and operational efficiency. The new concourse, he said, is a timely response to these challenges.
Once completed, the facility will feature modern passenger boarding bridges, upgraded waiting areas, VIP lounges, retail outlets and enhanced service infrastructure. The design aims to ensure smoother connections between terminals and a more seamless travel experience for passengers moving through Accra.
The expansion is widely seen as part of Ghana’s broader ambition to position itself as a key aviation hub in West Africa—serving not only regional travellers but also growing intercontinental traffic between Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
