Improved connectivity across the African continent is always a win for the traveller.

The most recent addition is the announcement that Ethiopian Airlines, the largest aviation group in Africa, is launching a three-weekly flight services to the city of Beira in central Mozambique via Malawi, effective from Tuesday, 3 September 2019.

Beira is the fourth largest and one of the main commercial cities in Mozambique and will serve as a gateway to most of the countries in Central Africa with potential tourist attractions, says the airline.

The route will also enable international passengers from Europe, North America, Middle East and Asia to enjoy seamless connections to/from Pemba, Nampula, Nacala and Tete with Ethiopian Mozambiqe Airline’s domestic service.

The flights will operate on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Ethiopian Airlines has also recently launched a thrice-weekly flight to John F Kennedy (JFK) Airport in New York via Abidjan in June. With new the JFK flight services, Ethiopian will be serving 24 weekly flights between African and North America.

JFK is the sixth busiest airport in the United States and an international gateway into North America. John F Kennedy Airport is the airline’s second station in New York in addition to Newark, connecting the North America’s gateway with its extended network of more than 120 destinations globally – including South Africa. Cape Town just recently confirmed added US connectivity with a direct flight between Newark and Cape Town coming into effect in December 2019.

Ethiopian Airlines’ Southern African Regional Manager, Abel Alemu says the airline has been focusing on “filling the connectivity vacuum” across secondary and tertiary cities and town within its route network.

“Supporting our main hub in Maputo, Beira will serve as our hub in central Mozambique directly connecting passengers to our global hub in Addis Ababa for further connections to various parts of the world,” says Alemu.

Based in Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, Ethiopian Mozambique Airlines serves 8 domestic points in Mozambique including the capital Maputo, Nampula, Tete, Pemba, Beira, Nacala, Quelimane, Vilankulos and Chimoio.
