Mozambique’s state-owned airline, Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM), has regained its place in the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Clearing House, a financial hub connecting airlines and travel agencies globally.

The reinstatement, confirmed by IATA Circular 068/23, comes after LAM fulfilled its obligations, signalling renewed financial collaboration.

Effective from August 4, 2023, LAM can participate fully in the IATA Clearing House, facilitating smooth financial exchanges with other airlines. This milestone marks a much-needed fresh start for LAM, which has navigated hard challenges over the last few years.

Under temporary management by South Africa’s Fly Modern Ark, LAM’s journey to stability has been a focal point. The future remains uncertain, with debates on privatization ongoing, but Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, believes expanding international routes will be a key part of LAM’s recovery.

LAM’s recent success in recovering US$47.3 million owed by the government and private entities is a significant achievement, though challenges remain. Minister Magala emphasizes cautious expansion to avoid past pitfalls, with a focus on routes to lucrative destinations.

The airline’s strategic growth plan includes revitalizing the Maputo-Lisbon route and venturing into promising markets like Brazil, India, Dubai, and China. LAM’s path ahead is challenging but holds potential for a transformed and resilient future on the global aviation stage.
