Seychelles has launched a new chapter in tourism connectivity with the arrival of the inaugural direct, non-stop charter flight from Chengdu, China, operated by Sichuan Airlines. This historic event unfolded early on November 19, 2024, at Seychelles International Airport, where the flight was welcomed with a ceremonial water cannon salute.
The launch of this flight stems from Seychelles’ strategic efforts to strengthen ties with China and capitalize on its growing outbound tourism market. Initiated during Seychelles’ President Wavel Ramkalawan’s visit to the Sichuan Province, held on the sidelines of the Ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing (September 4-6, 2024), the flight is expected to enhance travel options for Chinese tourists while boosting Seychelles’ tourism sector.
Upon landing, passengers experienced an authentic Creole welcome. Traditional garlands of vibrant flowers adorned their arrival, complemented by live performances of Seychelles’ music and dance. This unique reception set an exciting tone for the visitors’ island holidays.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 2,035 Chinese visitors arrived in Seychelles by mid-September 2024—a remarkable 87% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The introduction of this direct route is anticipated to amplify these numbers, fostering stronger tourism and cultural exchange between Seychelles and China.
The direct connectivity provided by Sichuan Airlines positions Seychelles as a convenient and appealing destination for Chinese travelers. This development aligns with Seychelles’ broader tourism strategy, targeting diversified source markets and increasing visitor arrivals through strategic air partnerships.
This milestone reaffirms Seychelles’ commitment to expanding its global reach while providing Chinese travelers with a seamless opportunity to explore the archipelago’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The arrival of this direct flight underscores the potential for aviation partnerships to transform tourism landscapes, promising a mutually beneficial future for Seychelles and China’s travel sectors.
