The Governing Council of Casa Africa has named veteran legislator Jose Segura as its new Director General.
Jose Segura replaces Luis Padron who headed the institution for five years making him the longest serving head of the Spanish diplomacy agency.
This was announced at a meeting held on Friday 1st March by the governing council of the organization. The Casa África Governing Council is composed of five representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation (MAUC), three representatives of the Canary Islands Government and one from the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council
They thanked Luis Padron for his outstanding leadership during the years as the head of the organization and wish him all the best in his endeavours.
Padron has been credited for his sterling role pushing the institution’s economic diplomacy with the partner countries especially in Africa. Casa Africa’s flagship program Investour celebrated its 10th anniversary and he was one of the pillars of this feats.
The new Director General official takes office on 18th March 2019. José Segura was born on July 4, 1944 in Barcelona.
Married and with 3 children, he is Doctor in Chemical Sciences, Professor of Thermodynamics at the Official Nautical School of Tenerife and Professor of Applied Physics at the University of La Laguna.
Segura started his career as a public representative in the Cabildo de Tenerife, where he was a counselor (in two legislatures, 1979-1983 and 1987-1991) and president in the period 1983-1987.
In 1989, he was elected senator for the island of Tenerife, a position he held for two years (1991-1993) with that of mayor of the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Between 1993 and 1996 he again served as a senator.
In 1996 he was elected deputy for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a position that was renewed for three terms until, in 2004, he resigned from Congress to exercise the position of delegate of the Government in the Canary Islands (2004-2008).
In 2008 he returned to appear as a congressman, a position he repeated in 2011.
