Ghana’s President , Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo has expressed his deep condolences to the family and loved ones of George Floyd saying “It cannot be right that, in the 21st century, the United States, this great bastion of democracy, continues to grapple with the problem of systemic racism”.

His words via tweet came on an eventful and well choreographed day that saw the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Barbara Oteng- Gyasi also send out a facebook post saying ” justice must be seen to be manifestly done”. In the mid-morning, the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority and coordinator of the Beyond the Return, Akwasi Agyeman, also joined a protest march from the Dubois centre to the US Embassy where a petition was presented.

The march attended by several Diaspora groups was a reminder of Ghana’s strong Pan-African leaning. Speakers included Rabbi Kohain of the Panafest Foundation , Ambassador Erica Bennet of the Diaspora Africa Forum, Princess Ocansey and Jermain Nkrumah of the Diaspora Network Television .

Last Year, Ghana’s tourism receipts increased to about $3.3 billion on the back of a very successful Year of Return. The country has announced a follow up 10-year campaign, Beyond the Return
