Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal is asking hotel owners and managers to work with government to reduce hotel rates in order to make the country a competitive tourism and hospitality destination.

Ghana has some of the highest accommodation rates in Africa with price averaging GH¢108 for one person. For two people sharing a typical double-occupancy hotel room, the average price for a hotel room in Ghana is GH¢217. Rates for Star-rated hotels are usually above the global average.

The Minister who was addressing patrons at the launch of the 10th anniversary celebration of Movenpick Ambassador Hotel Accra, said hoteliers must work closely with government to bring rates down.

“Hotel industry players and government must find a common ground to ensure that we reduce the cost of hotels in this country. The cost is a little too much and we can’t be competitive with this cost.

“Together with government we must find ways to make Ghanaian hotels competitive so that when tourists want to travel, Ghana will be their preferred choice,” Dr. Awal iterated.
