Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the renovated and modernized Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park on Tuesday, July 4, 2023. The ceremony took place one year after the President laid the foundation stone, marking the commencement of the ambitious project.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, established in 1991 during the tenure of the late Jerry John Rawlings, had remained untouched since its inauguration in 1992, resulting in considerable deterioration over time. To address this issue, the Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, temporarily closed the park for extensive renovation works.

The completion of the renovation project brings renewed glory to the memorial park, ensuring it appropriately honors the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah, the revered leader who led Ghana to independence in 1957 and served as its first President. Beyond restoration, the park has undergone a complete modernization, aligning it with international standards for such iconic landmarks.

Among the notable additions to the park are the state-of-the-art facilities, including a presidential library, receptive facility, mini-amphitheater, restaurant, freedom wall, and a digitalized payment and access system. The mausoleum, the final resting place of Kwame Nkrumah, has been fully refurbished, featuring an upgraded tombstone and an expanded museum with an immersive audiovisual tunnel.

Furthermore, the park now boasts an upgraded VVIP lounge, an expanded recreational area, a modernized gift shop, and a fountain area with synchronized audiovisual displays, a first of its kind in West Africa. These enhancements aim to transform the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park into one of the finest tourism and heritage attractions in the region.

With a budget of three million Dollars ($3 million), the modernization of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park aligns with the government’s strategic plans to elevate the park’s status as a premier cultural destination in West Africa. As an exceptional pan-Africanist and a key figure in Africa’s liberation from colonialism and imperialism, it is imperative that the final resting place of Dr. Nkrumah reflects his extraordinary contributions.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, in his address during the commissioning ceremony, emphasized the importance of preserving Ghana’s history and honoring the country’s heroes. He lauded the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture for their dedication to revitalizing the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting tourism and preserving Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

The inauguration of the renovated and modernized Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park marks a proud moment for Ghana, as it renews its commitment to honour the visionary leader who shaped the nation’s history. The park’s transformation not only preserves the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah but also provides locals and tourists alike with a world-class destination to appreciate and learn from Ghana’s remarkable journey towards independence.
