The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) is pulling out all the stops to showcase Kenya’s unique tourism offerings to global media ahead of the 2024 Magical Kenya Tourism Expo (MKTE). From September 27th to October 1st, media representatives from around the world are being treated to a diverse range of experiences across Kenya’s iconic destinations.

This initiative is part of KTB’s strategy to provide international media with a firsthand look at Kenya’s attractions, ensuring they can tell compelling stories to their audiences before the MKTE begins at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi from October 2nd to 4th.

This year’s MKTE is expected to attract over 5,000 delegates, including more than 160 hosted buyers and over 100 buyers’ clubs. With this extensive media familiarization trip, KTB is setting the stage for a grand event that will highlight Kenya’s diverse tourism products and create opportunities for local tourism businesses to connect with global markets.

Unveiling Kenya’s Tourism Gems
The media personnel have been divided into four teams, each embarking on a unique journey to explore the diverse landscapes, cultures, and wildlife that Kenya has to offer:

Amboseli/Meru: This team began their journey with a scenic game drive through Meru National Park and the serene Rhino River Camp in Meru, where they experienced a luxurious stay amidst the wilderness. A late afternoon game drive through the Rhino Sanctuary allowed them to witness the majestic rhinos in their natural habitat, followed by a sundowner to cap off the day. This experience not only showcased Kenya’s rich biodiversity but also highlighted the country’s conservation efforts. They’ll proceed to Amboseli, famed for its stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and large elephant herds.

Nairobi/Naivasha: Media representatives on this route started their adventure with a captivating boat ride on Lake Naivasha, exploring Crescent Island’s unique ecosystem. They then headed to The Forest, an adrenaline-pumping adventure park offering activities such as zip-lining, cycling, horse riding, archery, and paintball. The day concluded with a relaxing stay at Enashipai Spa & Resort in Naivasha, providing the perfect blend of adventure and luxury. This itinerary is designed to highlight Kenya’s appeal to thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike.

Nairobi/Kisumu/Lamu: This team embarked on an exploration of Kenya’s western and coastal gems, starting with a picturesque boat ride to Takawairi Island and Bird Island. They then visited the Kisumu Impala Animal Sanctuary before enjoying a late lunch and sundowner at Dunga Hill Camp. The day concluded with a taste of Kisumu’s vibrant nightlife. Next, they will head to Lamu, where they will immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of Kenya’s oldest town, showcasing the diverse tourism products the country has to offer.

Masai Mara/Diani: The Masai Mara team started with a game drive through the Mara BaseCamp Wilderness, renowned for its abundant wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. After checking in at their lodge and enjoying a sumptuous lunch, they went on an afternoon game drive and visited a cultural village to learn about the Maasai people’s rich traditions. Their journey will continue to the pristine beaches of Diani, where they will experience Kenya’s stunning coastal beauty, combining the best of safari and beach tourism.

Building Partnerships for Growth
The familiarization trips are a key part of KTB’s efforts to strengthen Kenya’s position as a top travel destination and to promote the upcoming MKTE as a prime platform for business networking and growth in the tourism sector. The trips aim to provide media representatives with authentic and immersive experiences that they can share with their audiences, inspiring more travelers to explore Kenya.

Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa had earlier emphasized in a statement the importance of MKTE in fostering connections between local tourism enterprises and international markets. “MKTE has been instrumental in creating linkages and partnerships that enable small and medium-sized tourism businesses to access global markets. This exposure is crucial for the growth and diversification of Kenya’s tourism sector,” he stated during a recent partners’ event. He encouraged investors to leverage the opportunities presented by the expo to network and explore partnerships with global buyers.

A Platform for Business and Innovation
The 14th edition of MKTE is expected to build on the successes of previous years by providing a dynamic platform for exhibitors and buyers to engage and explore new opportunities. KTB CEO June Chepkemei expressed optimism that the event will attract even more international interest this year. “We are looking to increase the number of hosted buyers from new source markets such as the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East, in addition to our traditional markets in Europe and Africa,” said Chepkemei.

She added that the focus this year is on diversifying Kenya’s tourism products to appeal to a broader range of travelers. “MKTE has established itself as a consistent and affordable platform for Kenyan travel trade, county governments, and affiliated brands to access international suppliers and markets. We are committed to showcasing the full range of experiences available in Kenya, from wildlife safaris and beach holidays to cultural and adventure tourism.”

Embracing New Opportunities
The MKTE will once again serve as a crucial platform for the Kenyan tourism industry to showcase its offerings, network with global partners, and explore new business opportunities. The participation of international media in these familiarization trips is expected to generate significant global interest in Kenya as a travel destination, further enhancing the country’s reputation on the world stage.

As the media teams wrap up their immersive journeys and gear up for the MKTE, the excitement is building. The 2024 Magical Kenya Tourism Expo is set to be a landmark event that not only celebrates Kenya’s tourism potential but also paves the way for future growth and innovation in the sector.
