After welcoming 250 visitors to Ghana in 2025, the Ghanaian destination management company has partnered with Sankofa Soul to bring another group for a heritage journey through Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi.

For the diaspora visitors travelling through Ghana with Afro Nyanka Tours and Sankofa Soul, the journey is an opportunity to encounter history and explore a personal connection to the land of their ancestors. At Nkyinkyim Museum, the group engaged with Ghanaian history and ancestral reconnection. Visits to the Assin Manso Slave River Site and Kumasi are also part of the itinerary.

The 2026 trip follows a 250-person visit organised by the partners in 2025. Sankofa Soul founder Charmaine Bourne said more people wanted to join that first group, and the organisers promised to return the following year. This time, 120 visitors have travelled to Ghana.

“Our expectations are to give people an experience, allowing them to feel connected to home, to where they really came from,” Bourne said.

Sankofa Soul began in New York City around 10 to 15 years ago, creating events where people could meet and connect through music. Its programme centred on Afro house, Afrobeats and other music with a strong connection to the drum. The organisation later began taking groups abroad to experience different cultures and ways of life, with earlier trips to Costa Rica, St Lucia and Curaçao.

For Bourne, Ghana brings together heritage, hospitality and music in a way that makes the journey especially resonant. The itinerary includes a planned visit to the Assin Manso Slave River Site for a naming ceremony, followed by an Ashanti tour in Kumasi.

“People in Ghana are so welcoming, lovely. The history, the castles, Kwame Nkrumah Centre, W.E.B. Du Bois, everything here is just really rich and fulfilling,” she said. “Attach that to music and you have the perfect combination.”

Christopher Atogsiba Atanga, owner and Chief Executive Officer of Afro Nyanka Tours, said the company designs homecoming travel to give visitors a deeper engagement with Ghana than sightseeing alone.

“Homecoming is more than sightseeing. It is about reconnecting people with their history, culture and identity,” he said. Afro Nyanka combines visits to historical sites with cultural experiences and opportunities to interact with local communities.

Atanga said the group’s enthusiasm and curiosity had been encouraging. Some visitors from the 2025 trip have returned, with a number bringing family members. He said their return reflected the trust built through the previous experience.

Afro Nyanka Tours is a Ghanaian destination management company specialising in premium, tailor-made travel, cultural tourism and large-group coordination. Its operations also extend to Togo, Benin and Côte d’Ivoire, where it organises multi-country cultural and leisure experiences.

For Atanga, luxury is expressed through care, comfort and the memories guests take home. “The true measure of luxury is not how much a guest spends, but how valued they feel, the memories they take home, and their desire to return,” he said.

As the visitors continue to Assin Manso and Kumasi, the itinerary will bring them into contact with further chapters of Ghana’s history and cultural heritage. Afro Nyanka Tours aims for guests to leave with a stronger connection to the country and with a reason to return.
