Cabo Verde holds media launch for the 1st UNWTO/ICAO Ministerial Conference on Tourism and Air Transport in Africa

The Authorities of Cabo Verde led by Dr. Jose Da Silva Gonçalves, Minister of Tourism and Transport and Minister of Maritime Economy has launched the The First UNWTO/ICAO Ministerial conference on Tourism and Air Transport in Africa in the presence of the civil aviation authorities of Cabo Verde, tourism stakeholders and the Media in Praia today.

The event which will be held from the 27-29 March 2019, in SAL island is being organized under the patronage of the Cabo Verde government in collaboration with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a specialised agency of the United Nations for Tourism and Aviation respectively.

The minister who addressed the launch assured the tourism community of a successful event and is confident it will help address the challenges associated with both sectors. He further emphasized that this event will be beneficial not only to Cabo Verde but to Africa in general. Tourism and Air Transport has a symbiotic relationship and we need to look for solutions in order to be able to increase connectivity in the continent, he said.

The UNWTO’s Director Africa department, Elcia Grandcourt has been visiting the island to assess progress of the ongoing preparations and also engage discussions with the high level authorities in Cabo verde.

The visit forms part of the preliminary processes that the UNWTO normally conducts when hosting such big events to finalise the preparations, logistics, and onsite inspection of the conference facilities and also to meet with the high level authorities of Cabo verde for the launch of the event.

The preliminary visit also included the participation of Mr. Peter Alawani, Chief, Economic Regulatory Framework at ICAO.
