The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is to support the Government of Cabo Verde in developing a Tourism satellite account (TSA) for the country’s tourism sector.

Cabo Verde, an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean and a member of the UNWTO, is seeking a technical assistance to review and strengthen its national tourism statistics system in order to further strengthen the collection of data and analysis for the next TSA compilation exercise.

A UNWTO expert is currently on a 10-day mission to Cabo Verde to work on this project. A series of mini-workshops have been scheduled for the different tourism stakeholders and entities.

As the engine of Cabo Verde’s economy, tourism is considered a sector of transformative and strategic importance in terms of creating business and employment opportunities, reducing poverty and contributing to Cabo Verde’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. International tourism contributes 24% to GDP and the industry represents 10% of employment.

For tourism development to be both sustainable and competitive, countries need a thorough understanding of their tourism sector and its role in the economy. This can only be achieved through a reliable and accurate tourism statistics system.
