A new book that explores Ghana’s vast tourism potential and offers a roadmap for innovation and entrepreneurship in the sector was officially launched yesterday at the British Council in Accra. Titled Tourism is Gold… the Path to Ghana, the book is the work of Dr. Damien Duchamp, a seasoned professor of tourism with over 30 years of global experience in the field.

The launch event attracted a broad spectrum of tourism stakeholders, including practitioners, students, media representatives, and industry leaders, all eager to engage with the insights presented in the book. The extensive discussions delved into key themes such as economic development, museums, lodging, maker tourism, and the role of technology in shaping the future of tourism.

Speaking in an interview with VoyagesAfriq, Dr. Duchamp expressed his excitement about the book launch and the inspiration behind it.

“I mean, today was a big day for me. Compared to other events in my life, having my first book published and being able to launch it in the country that inspired it is really important. I was excited to see the diversity of people that showed up—people from all over Ghana, from different backgrounds, different priorities, and different projects. I really hope that they take the book, use it, and turn it into something that benefits the tourism industry as a whole,” he said.

A Comprehensive Guide for Tourism Development

Tourism is Gold (TIG) is a transformative resource that merges theory with practical applications to foster sustainable growth in the tourism and hospitality sector. Divided into 21 chapters, the book serves as a user-friendly guide filled with innovative pedagogical exercises and real-world case studies, many of which are Ghana-centric.

Dr. Duchamp clarified the book’s purpose and its broader appeal beyond Ghana.

“It’s probably better to look at it as 80% tourism entrepreneurship—tools, theories, and strategies that can be used in any country. The other 20% uses Ghana as the lens. A lot of the examples, ideas, and experiences are Ghana-based, and that’s intentional because I love Ghana and I want Ghana to be its best version in the future,” he explained.

Dr. Duchamp’s journey with Ghana began nearly a decade ago when he was introduced to the country by Terry Oppong. Since then, he has visited Ghana twice a year, forming a deep connection with its tourism landscape. His doctoral research focused on Ghana, and through this academic exploration, he gathered insights that ultimately shaped Tourism is Gold.

“The problem with a dissertation is that most people will never read it, but a book designed for mass consumption—to be useful, strategic, and practical—that was my inspiration. I want it to be something that people can use as a tool to better whatever part of the tourism industry they are a part of,” he said.

With a clear vision for the book’s impact, Dr. Duchamp identified two key target audiences: students and industry professionals.

“It’s for students at every level, from primary school to doctoral studies. Because of the number of chapters and the flexibility in the activities, you could take it at a very low level or a very high level,” he stated.

On the industry side, he emphasized how managers and team leaders within tourism organizations could benefit from the book’s exercises to inspire and empower their teams.

“Any manager, team member, or leader within a tourism organization can use the activities in the book to motivate their team and help them achieve more,” he noted.

Dr. Duchamp envisions Tourism is Gold as a vital tool for Ghana’s tourism development. His ultimate measure of success is seeing the book actively used by industry professionals.

“Success for me would be finding this book tattered and used on somebody’s desk or in their car—something that they’re using on a regular basis,” he said.

With its in-depth exploration of tourism innovation and practical applications, Tourism is Gold is certainly an invaluable resource for tourism professionals and educators, ensuring that Ghana and other developing nations harness the full potential of their tourism industries for long-term growth and sustainability.
