The Republic of the Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville, has taken a significant step toward eliminating entry visa requirements for African nationals, with the proposed policy expected to take effect on January 1, 2027.

The country’s Council of Ministers approved a draft bill on October 14, 2026, to formalise the visa exemption announced by President Denis Sassou N’Guesso during Africa Day celebrations in May. The legislation must still be examined and adopted by Parliament before it becomes law.

Under the proposal, citizens of all African countries would no longer need an entry visa to visit the Central African nation. However, visa-free travel will not mean entry without any formalities. According to the government’s announcement, eligible African travellers will still be required to present an electronic travel authorization (ETA). Details of the application process and other requirements remain to be clarified.

President Sassou N’Guesso first announced the initiative on May 25, 2026, while addressing dignitaries and delegates gathered in Brazzaville for Africa Day and the African Development Bank Group’s Annual Meetings.

“From January 1, 2027, entry into the Republic of the Congo will no longer require a visa for all African nationals,” the president declared, describing the move as part of efforts to advance African unity and facilitate the movement of people across the continent.

The announcement was welcomed as a step toward the African Union’s broader integration agenda, which seeks to strengthen economic cooperation and make it easier for Africans to travel, trade and build relationships across national borders.

The policy could also create opportunities for tourism, business travel, cultural exchanges and investment by reducing the administrative barriers that often discourage Africans from visiting other countries on the continent.

For tourism operators, the proposed change could make Congo-Brazzaville more accessible to travellers from across Africa, potentially supporting greater regional travel and stronger connections between tourism businesses.

The initiative also aligns with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to deepen economic integration and expand trade among African countries. Easier movement of people is widely considered an important complement to these efforts.

However, the practical impact of the policy will depend on the final legislation and the implementation of the electronic travel authorization system.

If approved by Parliament and implemented as announced, Congo-Brazzaville’s planned visa exemption would represent another important development in Africa’s continuing efforts to reduce travel barriers and promote greater continental integration.
