Veteran Hollywood actor Danny Glover and members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) have arrived Ghana to participate in the Jamestown to Jamestown event as part of the Year of Return.
Numbering about 300, the group who arrived on Tuesday morning was met on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport by some members of the Year of Return Steering Committee and later met President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House. A brief reception was held at the Accra Tourist Information Centre.
Later a grand durbar of Chiefs of Queen Mothers which was also attend by the President was held at forecourt of the Mantse Abgona in Jamestown to officially welcome the group. While in Ghana the group will visit historic places of significance to the emancipation struggle, such as the W.E.B Dubois Centre, Last Bath at Assin Manso, Slave Dungeons in Elmina and Cape Coast and others.
In a brief remark, President of NAACP Derrick Johnson said they were very appreciative of the warm reception the group is receiving.
“We want to thank you for the open arms you have received us with, we are proud to be Africans, we are proud to be part of this great celebrations and we are proud to be with you today, he said.”
Diallo Sumbry, CEO of the Adinkra Group who coordinated the journey to Ghana said the group had been to Jamestown, Virginia a few days ago and now that they were at Jamestown in Accra, the significance of the Year of Return commemorations is further enhanced.
“This is probably the most significant because two days ago, we were in Jamestown, Virginia in a place where the found the remains of Africans who were there, they found artifacts and they’ve opened up an archeological site to continue to do the research to connect us from Jamestown to Jamestown,” said, Sumbry.
