Namibia reopens national parks in stage two of lockdown

Namibia’s national parks are officially open again following their closure in April as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism said on Thursday.

Romeo Muyunda, spokesperson of the ministry confirmed the reopening of the parks in stage two of Namibia’s lock-down, encouraging people to visit.

The national parks closed from April 17 to May 5, after Namibia declared the COVID-19 pandemic in Namibia as a state of emergency.

“The ministry wishes to inform the public that the country’s national parks are open and we urge Namibians to visit our remarkable parks as a way to support the country’s tourism sector during this difficult time,” he said.

He added that the private sector is also offering special packages for Namibians in order to promote domestic tourism.
