Red Rocks Initiative for Sustainable Development, a leading grassroots organisation based in Rwanda, is urging global partners and changemakers to support its mission to protect the Virunga Massif—one of the world’s most biodiverse and ecologically significant regions.

Founded in 2017, Red Rocks Initiative empowers local communities in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through conservation and sustainable development projects. The organisation’s flagship program, the Virunga Massif Project, is a cross-border initiative that promotes environmental stewardship, community empowerment, and economic resilience.

“At Red Rocks Initiative, we believe that the future of the Virunga Massif lies in the strength of its people and the preservation of its natural heritage,” says Greg Bakunzi, Founder of Red Rocks Initiative for Sustainable Development.
“Through cross-border collaboration and community-led action, we are creating a model where biodiversity conservation and sustainable development walk hand in hand. We call upon global foundations, partners, and changemakers to stand with us because protecting one of the world’s most biodiverse regions is not just a local effort, it’s a global responsibility.”

The organisation’s community-driven programs prioritise the inclusion of women and youth, offering practical solutions that blend conservation with livelihood development. These include:
• Cash for Work Scheme: Provides paid employment in environmental and infrastructure projects, empowering vulnerable groups while restoring ecosystems.
• Community Empowerment in Conservation: Trains women and youth in sustainable farming, forest management, and eco-tourism, enhancing both ecological and economic resilience.
• Hands-on Skills Development: Offers training in traditional crafts like sewing, weaving, pottery, and painting to promote cultural heritage and entrepreneurship.
• Youth Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program: Supports young innovators with business training, mentorship, and access to seed funding for green startups.
• Women’s Leadership and Advocacy Program: Equips women with tools and confidence to lead in their communities and advocate for gender equality and sustainable development.

Operating within the transboundary Virunga landscape, Red Rocks Initiative plays a vital role in uniting conservation efforts across Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC. The Virunga Massif is not only home to endangered mountain gorillas and other rare species, but also to communities striving for a better, more sustainable future.

Red Rocks Initiative invites the global community to join its efforts in preserving this vital ecological region while uplifting the people who call it home.
