The Uganda Tourism Board has launched a campaign to promote birdwatching in Uganda through the conservation of the country’s rare bird species.

Birdwatching is a popular activity and, increasingly, Uganda is becoming a preferred destination for birdwatchers from around the world. Uganda is home to a tenth of the world’s bird population, with around 1 078 species.

The third Africa Birding Expo, set to be hosted in Uganda from December 6-8 under the theme: “Celebrating birds and people to conserve the Fox’s Weaver”. The expo will take place in Entebbe, with members from the global bird-watching community in attendance.

Avitourism has become a large industry and is the biggest niche within eco-tourism. Birding is an emerging sub-sector of the nature-based tourism industry, where tourist travel motivations focus on bird watching, according the African Birding Expo.

The expo is planned to build a strong, recognisable destination brand that attracts domestic and international visitors and supports the conservation and growth of birding in Africa.

Activities at the expo include: Post- and pre-expo tours, lectures, talk shows, exhibitions and entertainment.
